In Chile, in the early 1970s, another future began.

Project Cybersyn was one of the world’s first experiments in cybernetic governance: an attempt to use real-time information, democratic coordination, and technology to improve the material lives of ordinary people.

Using telex machines, Cybersyn connected factories and public enterprises across Chile to a central computer. Production data, shortages, delays and urgent signals could move through the network in near real time.

For the first time, a government attempted to see itself as a living system.

Then the future was violently interrupted.

In 1973, the CIA helped destabilize Allende’s elected government. The coup that followed brought dictatorship to Chile and ended the Cybersyn experiment.

The dream of democratic cybernetics was buried under dictatorship.

The experiment was destroyed.

But the signal did not die. It waited.

The enemy is not technology.

The alternative is technology governed by communities, guided by public values, and audited in the open.
